Escribir 140 caracteres a través de una red social en Cuba, por muy sencillo que parezca, es un lujo que el grueso de la población caribeña no goza. Este es el caso de Twitter.
En la isla son pocas las personas que cuentan con una computadora de calidad en sus hogares. La mayoría son deportistas, músicos, doctores o bailarines que consiguen viajar al extranjero y tienen permiso de llevar equipos a Cuba; otros adquieren computadoras en el mercado negro.
Los que logran romper la limitante de hacerse de un equipo de cómputo, después tienen que lidiar con la mala calidad de las conexiones y los altos costos para navegar en internet en la isla.
Pese a que redes sociales como Twitter y Facebook no están bloqueadas por el gobierno cubano, como algunos otros sitio que promueven la disidencia, para un cubano promedio el acceso a éstas fuera de los centros educativos se convierte en un lujo que la mayoría no se puede conceder.
Una hora de acceso a internet en uno de los cibercafés que cada vez proliferan más en las principales ciudades cuesta unos seis dólares, lo que representa una fortuna si se piensa que el salario promedio mensual de un cubano es de alrededor de 30 dólares. Éstos, por lo general, son principalmente frecuentados por turistas extranjeros que visitan ciudades como Habana, Varadero, Santiago de Cuba o Cienfuegos.
Pero ante estas trabas los blogueros cubanos que son activos en sitios como Twitter han hallado algunas alternativas, que si bien siguen siendo costosas, les permiten acceder con mayor frecuencia a estas redes.
Esta alternativa se da a través de mensajes de texto de 140 caracteres enviados vía celular y que posteriormente se publican en sus cuentas del portal de microblogging. Participar en la red social de esta manera les cuesta un peso convertible (alrededor de 15 pesos mexicanos) por cada tweet enviado.
¿Bloqueo? en la red
Desde principios de semana la bloguera Yoani Sánchez denunció que el gobierno de la isla podría estar implicado en las fallas que se han presentado desde el viernes para acceder a Twitter.
Después agregó que en las computadoras de los cibercafés y hoteles, donde la conexión por una hora a internet cuesta unos cinco dólares, el acceso a la red social se daba sin problemas, y que era más bien el servicio para tuitear vía mensajes de texto el que había dejado de funcionar.
Ésta última opción, por ser la menos costosa, es la que emplean algunas decenas de cubanos que tiene fuerte presencia en la red. “Sin poder mandar nuestros tweets por sms dejamos de ser twitteros, porque el acceso a Internet aquí es tan escaso como la tolerancia”, escribió Sánchez en uno de sus mensajes de ayer.
Rápidamente salió al quite el gobierno cubano en voz del viceministro de la Informática y Comunicaciones, José Luis Perdomo, quien señaló que en la isla no se limita el acceso de los cubanos a las redes sociales.
“Cuba no bloquea el acceso de ningún ciudadano al envío de mensajes a las redes sociales en Internet como Twitter o Facebook y ello es una calumnia que se ha levantado contra nuestro país”
Subrayó además que plataformas como Twitter y Facebook no tienen acuerdos con la Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba para permitir el servicio gratuito de mensajes a esas redes desde teléfonos celulares, debido al bloqueo económico y comercial que Estados Unidos aplica contra la isla desde 1962.
Precisó que esa es la “verdadera causa por la cual a veces la comunicación es compleja” , y recordó que Cuba no puede acceder a otros servicios como los mapas de Google, debido a que EU incluyó al país en la lista de patrocinadores del terrorismo.
