En la actualidad 2.3 millones de estadunidenses están en prisión, es decir, más de uno de cada 100 adultos, según un reciente estudio del Pew Center.
La cifra se ha disparado desde los 500 mil en 1980, lo que supone un incremento del 300% y representa la mayor tasa actual de encarcelamiento mundial.
A partir de estos números no es de extrañar que desde 2000 el portal WriteAPrisoner.com se encargue de ayudar a los encarcelados, a miles de ellos, a recibir cartas del mundo exterior. Para ello publican en la web sus perfiles personales, fotografías e información de contacto.
El objetivo fundamental: ayudarles a sobrellevar la extrema soledad.
Robert Garza, un joven latino de Texas, presenta así su situación: “Estoy en el corredor de la muerte desde diciembre de 2003. Confinado en una celda de 2,4 por 3,6 metros. Me permiten salir de ella dos horas al día, cinco días a la semana. No tengo contacto físico con nadie y la comunicación con mis compañeros es limitada. Si quieres ser mi amigo, por favor, escríbeme”.
Una simple búsqueda en la web revela la existencia de más de 5 mil 600 perfiles. De ellos, 1.971 son blancos, 1.937 son afroamericanos, 1.062 son hispanos y 43 asiáticos. También hay nativos americanos y una clasificación multirracial. Sólo el 8,4 de los perfiles registrados corresponden a mujeres.
Entre los usuarios hay cerca de 800 condenados a cadena perpetua y más de 100 que esperan su turno para ser ejecutados, entre ellos, tres mujeres. La foto de perfil de Kerry Lyn Dalton, una rubia californiana de 45 años, podría pasar perfectamente por la de cualquier mujer de mediana edad en Facebook.
