En nuestro país existen alrededor de 30 millones de usuarios de Internet, la gran mayoría de los cibernautas mexicanos se encuentran concentrados en los centros urbanos más importantes de México; principalmente en las ciudades de: México, Guadalajara y Monterrey. Donde el 37% de los hogares posee cuando menos una computadora de estos hogares 7 de cada 10 acceden regularmente a Internet, siendo 3 horas y 21 minutos el tiempo de conexión diario en una semana típica a excepción de la ciudad de Monterrey donde el usuario regio permanece conectado en promedio 3 horas 40 minutos, ubicándose 20 minutos por encima de la media general, según el ultimo estudio de la Asociación Mexicana de Internet.

El manual de diagnostico del hospital militar de Pekín, elaborado por psicólogos de esta institución durante el año 2009 señala a la adicción a Internet como uno de los desordenes clínicos de mayor crecimiento, ubicándolo al lado de padecimientos como el alcoholismo y la ludopatía.

Los síntomas de esta nueva enfermedad son muy variados algunas de las señales de alerta son: no poder controlar el tiempo que se esta conectado, preferir estar navegando en Internet que realizar actividades en el mundo real, ansiedad y compulsión por estar siempre conectado a Internet, perdida de relaciones personales, entre otros. Además de estas complicaciones de carácter psicológico existen también consecuencias físicas como la privación del sueño, dolor en hombros y espalda, además de irritación de los ojos y posibles deformidades en la muñeca.

La adicción a internet se clasifica en cuatro categorías:

Sexual: es aquella donde el sujeto busca descargar en  su computadora fotos y videos con alto contenido sexual. En algunos casos los afectados buscan  relacionarse  a traves de medios virtuales con el fin de intercambiar experiencias sexuales.

Redes sociales: se manifiesta cuando el individuo busca estar siempre conectado a la red social, es un coleccionista de amigos , dedica un aproximado de seis horas diarias  o mas a mejorar su perfil, incluso en algunos casos existen personas que permanecen mas de 18 horas conectados a la red social de su preferencia.

Compras: esta condición brinda al cibernauta una sensación de placer al interactuar en sitios de juego, compras o casino, donde regularmente vacía sus cuentas bancarias y tarjetas de crédito sin pudor alguno.

Descargas: El usuario busca con compulsiva regularidad información reciente, contenidos multimedia como: audio y videos de actualidad los cuales pueda presumir en su círculo social.

El perfil de usuarios que son más propensos a caer en este tipo de adicciones se define de la siguiente manera: hombres y mujeres en edad adulta con nivel educativo universitario, familiarizados con la tecnología, y que por lo regular son individuos con personalidad tímida, retraída y en algunos casos presentan cuadros depresivos.

Son por lo regular personas solitarias con carencias afectivas y problemas para socializar y entablar relaciones con otros individuos.
