Por otra parte, los adultos entre los 25 y 40 años son los más activos y representan el rango de edad que tiene mayor crecimiento como segmento participante en este tipo de páginas. Se calcula que cada usuario de internet en nuestro país emplea un total de cuatro horas al día para mejorar su perfil en redes sociales.
Asimismo, el tiempo que le toma a un sitio de este tipo para ganar popularidad en nuestro país y penetrar en su mercado es de tres años
¿Cuáles son las ventajas de utilizar redes sociales?

– Permiten mantener contacto con amigos y familiares que viven en otros lugares del mundo, además de brindarte la oportunidad de conocer gente con gustos similares a los tuyos.
– Ofrecen la posibilidad de compartir archivos que van desde música, vídeos, hasta direcciones web e imágenes, de una manera rápida y sencilla.
– Borran las fronteras geográficas otorgando la posibilidad de establecer contacto con personas en cualquier parte del mundo.
– Ayudan a hacer conexiones dentro del mundo profesional, con colegas y expertos en las más variadas disciplinas.
– Posibilitan el acceso a información actualizada acerca de temas de interés, además te permite participar en foros de discusión, tener presencia en actos virtuales y conferencias especializadas sobre algún tema determinado.

– Pérdida de privacidad: al publicar información personal en los formularios de registro que se llenan al inscribirse en este tipo de sitios.
– El medio de comunicación tiende a ser impersonal, es un humano interactuando con una máquina que a su vez interactúa con otro individuo.
– Suplantación de identidad: un usuario sin escrúpulos puede crearse fácilmente una identidad diferente a la propia.
– Creación de altos niveles de dependencia, según la personalidad del usuario.
– Plagio de contenidos desarrollados por otros usuarios de internet.
– Los perfiles pueden ser utilizados por criminales para recabar información sobre sus futuras víctimas en delitos como: secuestro, acoso, abuso sexual, tráfico de personas y trata de blancas.
– Falta de control sobre el uso que se le da a la información publicada en estos perfiles de carácter público.
– Son en algunos casos canales de difusión de materia violento, racista, sexista y xenófobos.
Redes sociales en el mundo
Por otra parte existen, a Septiembre de 2009 según datos de Google, 1.73 billones de usuarios de internet en todo el mundo. Un informe elaborado por la consultora InSites devela que actualmente hay en promedio 940 millones de personas registradas en servicios de redes sociales por Internet.
Las más populares según el número de visitantes mensuales son:
