Washington, 23 sep (EFE).- El fundador de Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, planea donar 100 millones de dólares a las escuelas de Newark, Nueva Jersey (EE.UU.), la mayor suma de dinero que hasta el momento el empresario de 26 años ha entregado a causas filantrópicas.

Según el diario The Wall Street Journal, el alcalde de esa ciudad, Cory Booker, el gobernador de Nueva Jersey, Chris Christie, y el fundador de la popular red social anunciarán mañana la multimillonaria iniciativa en el programa televisivo de Oprah Winfrey.

Este proyecto educativo será así el debut como gran filántropo de un joven que Forbes colocó ayer por primera vez en el puesto 35 de su lista de los 400 estadounidenses más ricos del año, a sólo un lustro del comienzo de su empresa.

La elección de esta causa se debe al interés que desde hace años tiene en la educación, y en su preocupación por los bajos salarios de los profesores, según el diario, que cita también su relación amistosa con el alcalde de esta ciudad, Newark, cuyo sistema educativo es de los peores del país.

Sólo la mitad de los 40.000 estudiantes de la ciudad consiguen graduarse de Secundaria y un quinto de ellos se matriculan en universidades.

Los 100 millones de dólares igualan la cantidad que la fundación de Bill y Melinda Gates otorgó a un distrito escolar de Florida el pasado año y representan también una pequeña suma para las rumbosas cuentas del joven millonario.

Según Forbes, la fortuna de Zuckerberg es de 6.900 millones, aunque su exitosa compañía virtual está valorada en más de 20.000 millones de dólares de acuerdo con las estimaciones inversoras.

El anuncio coincide con las controvertidas historias que giran en torno a Zuckerberg, sobre todo las que llegan desde Hollywood, por el próximo estreno de la película “The Social Network”, una crónica sobre los orígenes de Facebook que ha disgustado al protagonista.
